Vintage Flight Recorder Explained

Bill opens up a vintage "black box" from a Delta airlines jetliner. He describes how the box withstands high temperatures and crash velocities because it is made from Inconel: A superalloy steels that is used in furnaces and others extreme environments. The flight data recorder he shows is a Sundstrand FA-542 and was likely used on a DC-9 in the 1970s, although it could have been used as late as 1988 on a Boeing 727.

Air Australia grounded and placed into administration

Budget airline Air Australia has gone into voluntary administration amid claims it was paying foreign flight attendants as little as $90 a day.

The airline's entire fleet was grounded early this morning after administrators discovered there was no money to meet basic operational expenses.

Around 4,000 passengers are believed to be either stranded overseas or potentially out of pocket.

What happened to Air France flight 447?

Welcome to my inaugral blog for Dangerous Goods.

While setting up some news alerts and doing some research this morning, I came across the following article published in the New York Times on 4th May 2011.

What happened to Air France flight 447?
by Wil S Hylton

The story documents the fourth expedition mounted to find more of the Air France Airbus A330, in the South Atlantic Ocean, that vanished in 2009.

Initial the expeditions found the wreckage of the plane, but not the flight recorders. In early May 2011 both the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder were recoverd.

Even with the analysis of the flight recorders an official cause has not been determined. As Wil S Hylton discusses, there is a great deal of information pointing to the pitot tubes delivering false air speed data.
